Medals in a Drawer? Here's How Runners Actually Display Theirs

Most runners have the same problem within about a year of starting: medals pile up faster than any sensible plan for storing them. Here's what people actually do about it, roughly in order of how much effort it takes.

The honest default: a hook on the back of a door

Cheap, instant, holds a surprising number of medals. The downside is the one nobody mentions until they've got eight medals on there: from across the room, or in a photo, they all look identical. Same ribbon colour range, same vague medal shape — you genuinely can't tell the half marathon from the 5K without walking over and reading the small print on the medal itself.

Medal hangers and racks

A step up — a proper wall-mounted rack, sometimes shaped like a running figure, with hooks along the bottom. Solves the storage problem properly and looks intentional on a wall. Doesn't solve the "which one is which" problem any better than the door hook does, though — you're still looking at a row of ribbons.

Shadow boxes

The best-looking option if you've only got one or two medals you really care about — a marathon, say, or a first ultra. Not really built for an ever-growing collection, and it takes the medal out of circulation (you can't wear it again for a photo, lend it to a kid to show their class, or just pick it up and hold it).

The option that travels with the medal itself

A personalised slider threads onto the ribbon of the medal it belongs to, so the "which one is which" problem is solved permanently, on every single medal, without buying a separate display system at all. Hang them on the same door hook you already use — now every one of them has a name and a time on it, at a glance, from across the room.

It's also the only option on this list where the medal never leaves the ribbon it came on.

Give your medal collection names, not just ribbons

Order one slider or a whole shelf's worth — no minimum, and each one takes about a minute to design.
